PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A survey by The Oregonian has found that most of the estimated 2,400 new teachers who graduated from Oregon colleges this year were unable to get hired anywhere in the state.
School officials and others who monitor the job market say this was the state's worst hiring season for new teachers in at least a generation.
The survey suggests that fewer than 600 new teacher graduates got hired in Oregon this fall, although some were able to find jobs in other states or overseas.
Still, the lack of jobs apparently hasn't discouraged people from trying to enter the field. Many of Oregon's colleges of education report their largest number of applicants ever this year.
