Throughout the day on Saturday, June 19, there will be ways to celebrate. The annual Portland Juneteenth celebration, with Freedom Parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and festival at Alberta and Sumner Streets. Rep. Lew Frederick serves as Grand Marshall. At 1 p.m. Mayor Sam Adams will introduce new Portland Police Chief Mike Reese. Also appearing, Miss Black Oregon Sable Scott, and Multnomah County Commission candidate Loretta Smith. A gospel concert will be at 6 p.m.
Before the parade, A day of service will be held at Roosevelt High School. Over 500 volunteers will be coming and more are needed. This needs to be a sustainable event with the Roosevelt community being involved. The all day event starting at 9 a.m. Roosevelt High School.
Also at Portland State University, the DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD 2010 celebrates cultural diversity, which supports progress toward health & the education of African children. Music, dance, story telling, drums and more. Free event goes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PSU Park Blocks alongside PSU Farmer's Market.
