Jamal Fox, one of two current Deputy Chiefs of Staff in the office of Mayor Ted Wheeler, has accepted a position as Administrator for the City of Camas, Washington. Before joining Mayor Wheeler’s office as Deputy Chief of Staff in July 2019, Fox served as a property and business development manager in Portland’s Parks and Recreation Bureau. While in City Hall, Fox served as a liaison for many economic development projects in the Mayor’s office. His accomplishments include creating a vision for the Portland Restoration Academy, creating employment opportunities for ex-offenders through our Office of Youth Violence Prevention, as well as pushing for the Juneteenth Paid Holiday and Day of Remembrance ordinance, and partnering with the Bureau of Human Resources on the implementation of a City Core Values resolution created by Dr. Alison Prasad.

“Jamal has been a tremendous asset to our staff and the City of Portland as a whole,” Mayor Wheeler said.

“His leadership, guidance and community engagement skills have served our city well. He has been integral in building an equitable economy, achieving shared prosperity, and implementing ongoing police reform. We wish him all the best in his new role. He will be missed.”

In his new position, Fox says he will focus on many of the goals he achieved during his time with the City of Portland: protecting natural land, lakes and recreational assets, with an emphasis on future smart planned growth for the city, and deepening community engagement. He will also work to build bridges and re-establish trust internally, fostering a community where all perspectives are welcome, respected and heard.

“I cannot thank Mayor Wheeler enough for the opportunity to join his team. He provided me his support, encouragement, and grace as I provided my leadership to his team,” Fox said. “I will miss working with the Mayor, our team, city staff and the community.

"It has been a pleasure to have worked alongside so many dedicated professionals.”

Fox’s last day with the City of Portland will be Friday, August 28, 2020.
