The largest children's parade in the nation, the Fred Meyer Junior Parade, is Wednesday, June 9, at 1 p.m. on 51st Avenue traveling west on NE Sandy Blvd to 40th and then Grant High School. The Junior Parade features numerous bands, mascots, and dignitaries, but most of all, children of all ages come to show off their creativity and pride for their schools, communities, cultures, and local organizations.
2010 Junior Parade Grand Marshal is Savannah Outen. Savannah is a 17-year old Portland native singer and has become a Radio Disney sensation. She is gaining what some consider 'star status' with more than 5 million views at YouTube and more than 214,000 subscribers. Savannah is currently working on her forthcoming debut album.
This year's parade boasts three special sections: "Kids on the Go" presented by Union Pacific, "Kids & Families" presented by Sparkling Juicy Juice and Nesquik, and "Kids Learning and Growing" presented by The Oregonian. Other special appearances include the Fred Bear, the Nesquik Bunny, Tillie the Cow, the Love Loaf Tour Baby Loaf Bus, and the debut of the Union Pacific Miniature Train with riders from the Tucker Maxon Oral School.
Bringing sound and spirit, 30 different elementary and middle school marching bands from around the greater Portland/Vancouver metro area will march in the parade. The featured guest band this year is the 175 member Voyager Middle School from Everett, Washington. In addition to the music, dance, drill and baton groups will add even more rhythms to the route.
Our community's children have been celebrated by the Portland Rose Festival since its establishment in 1907. In 1936, the Junior Parade became an official Rose Festival event and brings out more than 10,000 youngsters each year as a beloved tradition for many Portlanders.
