Help The Skanner News Group raise money for the Mercy Corps response to the Haiti Earthquake.
So far (as of this writing) readers, staff and supporters of The Skanner have helped to raise $1,550 for Mercy Corps efforts in Haiti. Robin Morris Collin, keynote speaker at The Skanner's 24th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, donated her entire speaking fee to The Skanner's Mercy Corps account.
Do what you can to help the people of Haiti, who are suffering as they never have before. Mercy Corps is providing immediate water and sanitation assistance, and trauma support.
Doctors Without Borders report that the 10 operating rooms they run are performing 130 operations around the clock -- many of them amputations. Several supply planes have been diverted away from Port-au-Prince airport, leaving some doctors with nothing more than a common hacksaw to perform lifesaving limb amputations.
History:
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince Tuesday afternoon, collapsing buildings, including at least one hospital. Tens of thousands are feared dead in the largest quake to strike the impoverished Caribbean nation in 200 years. Power is out, telecommunications are spotty and food and water are reportedly growing scarce.
The first members of a Mercy Corps emergency response team are en route to help survivors. Please visit the following link to help the survivors of this devastating quake.
